Most painting companies use subcontractors to all costs and evade payroll taxes. Why is this bad for you? There is a simple answer: the cheaper the products, equipment, and more corners they can cut, the more they maximize their profits. If you go on this path, ensure the materials used are listed on the contract and used during the project.
If a company pays someone by the hour under 1099 status, that is payroll tax evasion. If they are subcontracting correctly, they produce a flat rate. The subcontractor has to supply all the labor, tools, and materials. They should also deal directly with the client and set up the schedule.
